This is one of Magis’s new pieces for 2025.

The mirror looks soft and bouncy—almost like mochi or jelly.

Its design gives it a playful, puffy feel.

It would definitely make you smile if you had it on your wall.

And yet, it’s beautifully matched with a calm, dark brown shelf made of ash wood.

What stayed with me was the warm, calming feel of the wood.

Even in a calm, hotel-like space with muted colors, I think it would blend in with quiet elegance—while also adding a striking, eye-catching touch, like a piece of contemporary art.

The fact that you can casually place small items on this shelf also makes it practical.

And personally, I don’t think you need to overthink what to put on it.

Your go-to perfume, the ring you always wear,
the house key you return to its spot after coming home.

Even these everyday items can become part of a beautiful little scene—
a picture of your life that feels intimate and warm.

I feel that it’s precisely because it’s a Magis piece that it leaves room to enjoy the everyday, just as it is.

It feels like more than a mirror— smooth, round, and full of presence.

This impressive piece is named Marlene.

When you stand in front of it, you can see your reflection—just like in a regular full-length mirror.

Even so, the sense that Marlene is something more than a mirror remains unchanged.

In front of Marlene, we’re just lucky passersby — reflected and quietly enchanted.

What’s going on with this mirror frame?

What on earth is going on…?
That’s the only thing I could say.

The clear, transparent glass… brings to mind the kind of delicate patterns you might see on the frames of artworks in a museum—expressed entirely through glass.

(I don’t quite have the right words for it.)

“This must be something the Snow Queen made with magic, right?”
Nope — it was made by Glas Italia.

“It’s ice, isn’t it?”
Nope — it’s glass.

It wouldn’t be surprising if a conversation like that actually happened—
the piece has a beauty so pure, it feels almost sacred.

The graceful play of light and shadow feels like the Snow Queen herself carved them with magic.

(In reality, it was designed by Piero Lissoni, and this stunning frame is made from Murano glass.)

My eyes—my eyes! I’m completely spellbound!

(Yes, that was a Laputa reference.)

Perhaps it’s because, despite the classically organic form, all color has been stripped away—
allowing the crisp square mirror at the center to boldly assert its presence.

The final impression? Purely modern life.
Classical ornamentation becomes something that shines in a contemporary setting.

And yet, from the very day it’s installed,
it’s sure to transform the entire space into a moment of awe.

Some of you may already know that “Sturm und Drang” was also the name of a literary movement in late 18th-century Germany, led by writers like Goethe and Schiller.

Translated directly from German, it means “storm and urge” or “storm and stress” in English.

In Japanese, it is often rendered as “疾風怒濤” (shippū-dotō)—a phrase evoking intense emotion and upheaval.

I can’t help but wonder about the story behind this name—and how each of you might interpret the connection between that phrase and this mirror.

In English, the name of this piece translates to “Dionysus’s Mirror.”
In Greek mythology, Dionysus is the god of wine, abundance, and ecstasy.

It makes me wonder—what inspired such a name for this mirror?

The colors were striking — playful in a way that made me think of Sottsass.

And yes, it turned out to be his work!

The flat colors, almost like filled-in shapes, and the richness of the forms
give the impression of primitive symbols—something that speaks directly to our intuition.

Even just one piece stands out and brings joy.

But when you place several together, they create a rhythm—and it becomes even more fun.
Imagine lining these mirrors up on a wall. They would light up the room with their presence.
It would be hard not to smile.

Even in photos, I think you can already feel some of that charm.

And of course… it’s Glas Italia.

So when you see it with your own eyes, it’s even more impressive.
The texture and feel of the glass—it’s a feast for the eyes. Truly beautiful.

It’s so clear, so alive—
you might find yourself whispering, “The glass is breathing…”

Even the edges of the glass are perfectly refined—
finished with incredible precision and care.

And the color of the glass—
it’s pure and vivid, like paint squeezed fresh from the tube.

Okay, I’ll say it—I’m totally in love.

Did I just confess?
That’s how much charm these mirrors have.

When I first saw this mirror, I couldn’t help but smile.

I thought, “How delightful!”

The small hand-drawn illustrations feel like the kind of sketches you’d make with a pencil in the corner of your notebook—spontaneous and full of personality.

They bring a playful, light-hearted spirit to the piece, making it feel warm and inviting.

At first glance, it might seem like a plain mirror.
But take a closer look—and you’ll see that the entire lower half of the frame is filled with detailed illustrations.

It’s a quiet surprise, waiting to be discovered.
These drawings add depth and charm, turning something ordinary into something full of personality.

As you focus on the illustrations, you begin to notice something charming:

The Many Faces of Mirrors

Mirrors are objects with many different roles and meanings.

Like the rearview mirrors in cars or the convex mirrors on curved roads, mirrors help keep us safe in our daily lives.

Mirrors also serve a practical role in our everyday routines—checking our skin, applying makeup, shaving, or making sure our outfit looks right before heading out. They are everyday tools, closely tied to our daily lives.

At the same time, mirrors have a mysterious side.
Sometimes, looking into one can feel like peering into another world—just like when we gazed into a puddle as children and imagined a different universe on the other side.

In my case, when I see my face in the mirror in complete darkness, it sometimes looks like a pale, unfamiliar creature.
The expression feels vague and not quite my own—and in that moment of fear, I find myself quickly turning on the light.

The Role of Mirrors
in Interior Design

Mirrors are also incredibly versatile as interior design elements.

Mirrors can brighten a room by reflecting light, or make a space feel larger—almost as if there’s another room beyond the wall.

In commercial spaces, they’re often used to ease the feeling of crowding or to create a sense of the extraordinary.

They can also be used, as seen in teamLab’s installations, to reflect light and objects infinitely, creating effects that disorient our sense of space and direction.

Mirrors as Art

The theme of this series is “Mirrors as Art.”
Of course, the question of what defines “art” can go quite deep.

For the purpose of this series, however, “as art” refers to that quiet emotional resonance you feel when you hang a favorite painting on the wall—the way it brings a space to life and gives it a sense of theme or character.

“Mirrors as Art” are the kinds of mirrors that, the moment you hang them on a wall or lean them against it, go beyond mere practicality—they instantly bring a space to life.

They’re the mirrors that quietly speak to us, offering subtle messages to our lives, and move us each time we catch a glimpse of them.
